The 17 Verses Podcast: Distilling the Qur'an One Day at a Time

The 17 Verses podcast is a short, daily recitation of the Qur'an in spoken English. Our purpose is to enable busy Muslims (or non-Muslims) to be exposed to the Qur'an each day, delivered to their phones/iPads/etc. If you average approximately 17 verses per day, you can get through the entire Qur'an in about a year. The Qur'an can definitely feel intimidating but if it's taken in small pieces, it needn't be so. So join us as we go through the Qur'an every day.

Today's selection is from Surah 21, Al-Anbiyã’ or the Prophets, verses 30-50. These verses tell the story of how God split the skies and earth apart and created all living things from water. Allah has not granted immortality to any human beings and invented Gods cannot defend themselves. So how can they defend the unbelievers against Allah? Lastly On the Day of Atonement, the scales of justice will be setup to render judgment .

Today's selection contains the entirety of Surah 90, Al-Balad or the City. This surah contains an admonishment to the disbelievers of the city of Makkah. It declares that God has given you one tongue and two lips to control and then speaks of the qualities of a righteous person.

Today's selection is the entirety of Surah 62, Al-Jumu‘ah or Friday, verses 1-11. This surah makes 3 major points. Allah has appointed Muhammad (pbuh) as his Messenger. God has rebutted the claims of the Jews to be the favorites of Allah to the exclusion of others. And finally a commandment relating to the obligation of Friday Prayers.

Today's selection is from Surah 2, Al-Baqarah or the Cow, verses 177-182. These verses give an Islamic definition of righteousness, laws of equality and the commandment of Allah to execute a last will and testament. 

Tafseer for this selection expounds upon using the word equality rather than retribution or retaliation in verse 178 as well as the use of the word "brother" to represent an aggrieved party.

These verse give us signs from nature to recognize God, discusses the punishments of the mushrikeen, regretting one's actions on the Day of Judgment, advises us not to follow inthe footsteps of Shaitan, not to profess faith blindly, instructs us on forbidden foods and finally admonishes us that those who hide the truth for worldly gains swallow nothing but fire.

Today's selection is from Surah 3, Âli-‘Imrân or the Family of Imran, verses 102-109. These verses counsel the faithful to live Islam, die as a Muslim and not to be divided amongst ourselves for there is punishment for those who divide Muslims into sects.

Today's selection is from Surah 9, At-Tauba or Repentance, verses 43-59. These verses assert that those who do not participate in Jihad or struggle are hypocrites and then lists the excuses of the hypocriates for not bearing arms against the unbelievers. This latter part of Surah At- Tauba was revealed after the Tabūk expedition in the late summer of A.H. 9 (around October 630 AD in the modern Gregorian calendar). 

Tafseer for this selection is a short historical exposition on the Tabūk region of northwestern Arabia.

Today's selection is from Surah 9, At-Tauba or Repentance, verses 30-42. These verses assert Jews and Christians, who call Ezra and Jesus the sons of God, respecitvely, are mushrikeen. Do not be like the rabbis and priests who misappropriate the wealth of people. Four of the 12 months in the Qur'an are declared sacred and God orders the faithful to bear arms against the unbelievers, if necessary.

These verses advise the believers not to take Jews or Christians as protectors for only Allah, his Messenger and your fellow believers can protect you. Do not befriend those who make a mockery of your religion nor those who slander and deceive. If only the People of the Book had believed, they would have had the best of both world.

These verses deal with trials and tribulations of Man and how he takes good fortune for granted and mistakenly wails in indignation when things don't go his way when in reality, he did not deserve glad tidings. The Day of Judgment will be too late for him to change his ways.

Today's selection concludes Surah 55, Ar-Rahmân or the Most Gracious, with verses 46-78. In this selection, we learn that the righteous will be justly rewarded in heaven as well as the content of that reward, while the unfaithful are still questioned as to which of these aspects of God's providence they still choose to deny. 

There is also a quick tafseer concerning "hur" or "huri", which has been misinterpreted many times by the mainstream western media.

When an affliction befalls a people, they cry out to God but after God helps them, they commit shirk instead. Lastly, we hear the commandment to give one's relatives their due and likewise to the poor and travelers in need.

Today's selection is from Surah 74, Al-Muddaththir or The One Wrapped Up, verses 1-31. These verses cover the need for patience in a period of great spiritual stress; the unjust who cause sorrow and suffering now will find themselves in agony in the Hereafter. 

Tafseer for this surah concerns the meaning behind of the word Al-Muddaththir, which was one of the nicknames of the Prophet Muhammad as well as a history of the opponent in this Surah, a man named Walïd bin Mughïrah.
