The 17 Verses Podcast: Distilling the Qur'an One Day at a Time

The 17 Verses podcast is a short, daily recitation of the Qur'an in spoken English. Our purpose is to enable busy Muslims (or non-Muslims) to be exposed to the Qur'an each day, delivered to their phones/iPads/etc. If you average approximately 17 verses per day, you can get through the entire Qur'an in about a year. The Qur'an can definitely feel intimidating but if it's taken in small pieces, it needn't be so. So join us as we go through the Qur'an every day.

Year 2 - Surah 40 (Ghãfir/Al-Mu’min), Verses 1-20

As-salaam wa-alaikum, brothers and sisters.

Today's selection is from Surah 40, which goes by two names, Ghãfir which means Forgiver or Al-Mu’min or the Believer, verses 1-20. As-salaam wa-alaikum, brothers and sisters.

Today's selection is from Surah 24, An-Nûr or The Light, verses 1-26. This selection deal with the punishments for both men and women found guilty of fornication (or sex outside of marriage). It also hands down punishments for men who falsely accuse women of fornication and women who falsely accuse a man of fornication as well as what to do with accusations of adultery. An instance of these rules is highlighted when a false accusation was brought against one of the Prophet's wives, 'Aisha, who was ultimately cleared. Lastly, the believers are exhorted not to follow Satan or take part in false accusations and calumny or slander.

Year 2 - Surah 36 (Yâ-Sin), Verses 1-32

As-salaam wa-alaikum, brothers and sisters.

Today's selection is from Surah 36, Yâ-Sin, verses 1-32. These are pretty short verses so this episode won't take longer than the normal time. This selection reveals that the Qur'an was sent as a warning to those who fear Allah and seek forgiveness. An example is given of the time when Allah sent three Prophets to one town but the entire town rejected them except one man. It is told Allah blessed that believer with paradise and destroyed the wicked who opposed God.

Year 2 - Surah 4 (An-Nisâ), Verses 1-14

As-salaam wa-alaikum, brothers and sisters.

Summary

Today's selection is from Surah 4, An-Nisâ or the Women, verses 1-14. These verses deal with the property and conduct with orphans, multiple marriages, dowry, inheritance by children or family, and inheritance of spouse's property.

There are controversial parts of this selection and this Surah with which not everyone will agree. But still, I think it's important for people to read and hear what is written. What you do with it is your business.
