The 17 Verses Podcast: Distilling the Qur'an One Day at a Time

The 17 Verses podcast is a short, daily recitation of the Qur'an in spoken English. Our purpose is to enable busy Muslims (or non-Muslims) to be exposed to the Qur'an each day, delivered to their phones/iPads/etc. If you average approximately 17 verses per day, you can get through the entire Qur'an in about a year. The Qur'an can definitely feel intimidating but if it's taken in small pieces, it needn't be so. So join us as we go through the Qur'an every day.

Year 2 - Surah 29 (Al-‘Ankabüt), Verses 1-13

As-salaam wa-alaikum, brothers and sisters.

Summary

Today's selection is from Surah 29, Al-‘Ankabüt or the Spiders, verses 1-13. These verses assert that Allah tests the believers to see who is truthful and who is a liar. Be kind to your parents but do not obey them if they commit shirk (or associating others with Allah). Lastly, those who claim to be able to alleviate our burdens are liars.

Year 2 - Surah 21 (Al-Anbiyã’), Verses 1-10

As-salaam wa-alaikum, brothers and sisters.

Summary

Today's selection is from Surah 21, Al-Anbiyã’ or the Prophets, verses 1-10. This short selection concerns the Day of Accountability (or Judgment) and how the unbelievers dispute the admonitions to obey God and argue about whether a human being can be a Messenger of God.

Year 2 - Surah 11 (Hüd), Verses 1-24

As-salaam wa-alaikum, brothers and sisters.

Today's selection is from Surah 11, Hüd, verses 1-24. These verses deal posit Allah as the Sustainer of all creatures and that Man, except the believers, is ungrateful to God. It asserts that the Qur'an is not a forgery by Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), and divides the People of the Book into two camps - those who can see the Truth and those who choose not to see the Truth.

Muhammad Ali, Omar Mateen and the

As-salaam wa-alaikum, brothers and sisters.

This is a bonus episode of the 17 Verses podcast. I’ve still released a Qur’anic recitation for today so feel free to download that episode as well.

I've been thinking a lot lately about peace and loss and violence and the myths we teach each other about the existence and lives and beliefs of the "Other". Muhammad Ali, Omar Mateen, a total vision of Islam... how do we reconcile ourselves, live our Deen and in Peace.

Surah 7 (Al-A‘rãf), Verses 163-181

As-salaam wa-alaikum, brothers and sisters.

Summary

Today's selection is from Surah 7, Al-A‘rãf or the Heights, verses 163-181. These verses discuss a past Jewish violation of the Sabbath and their mistaken belief about Allah's forgiveness. Next, mankind's ancient testimony that God is their Lord, an example of those who deny God's revelations and a comparison that misguided people are like animals, only worse.
